NLU in Virtual Assistants

As opposed to the telephone-based virtual agents that prompt the user at each conversational turn, modern virtual AI assistants are always in an idle state expecting for a user to wake them up with a conventional phrase such as “Hey Google” or by pushing a button on a mobile telephone, and then issuing a request. In other words, the users initiate the interaction, and since they are not prompted, they can ask pretty much anything. In a very few cases, after a successful interaction, users are prompted to follow up with more information, as in the following example:
